  新中國(guó)成立之初,黨和政府以全新的思路、百倍的熱情,對(duì)舊中國(guó)遺留下來(lái)的棘手的民族問(wèn)題進(jìn)行了全面梳理和研究,并一直探索在社會(huì)不斷發(fā)展中逐步予以解決的道路。伴隨這個(gè)過(guò)程,一個(gè)由中國(guó)學(xué)者自己創(chuàng)立的、旨在解決中國(guó)自身民族問(wèn)題的理論——“中華民族多元一體”理論也應(yīng)運(yùn)而生。《中華民族多元一體格局》這篇著名杰作。其主要論點(diǎn)可概括為:一、中華民族是包括中國(guó)境內(nèi)56個(gè)民族的民族實(shí)體,并不是把56個(gè)民族加在一起的總稱,因?yàn)檫@些加在一起的56個(gè)民族已結(jié)合成相互依存的、統(tǒng)一而不能分割的整體,在這個(gè)民族實(shí)體里所有歸屬的成分都已具有高一層次的民族認(rèn)同意識(shí),即共休戚、共存亡、共榮辱、共命運(yùn)的感情和道義。這個(gè)論點(diǎn)后被陳連開(kāi)先生引申為民族認(rèn)同意識(shí)的多層次論。多元一體格局中,56個(gè)民族是基層,中華民族是高層。二、形成多元一體格局有一個(gè)從分散的多元結(jié)合成一體的過(guò)程,在這過(guò)程中必須有一個(gè)起凝聚作用的核心。漢族就是多元基層中的一元,但它發(fā)揮凝聚作用把多元結(jié)合成一體。三、高層次的認(rèn)同并不一定取代或排斥低層次的認(rèn)同 ,不同層次可以并存不悖,甚至在不同層次的認(rèn)同基礎(chǔ)上可以各自發(fā)展原有的特點(diǎn),形成多語(yǔ)言、多文化的整體。所以高層次的民族可說(shuō)實(shí)質(zhì)上是個(gè)既一體又多元的復(fù)合體,其間存在著相對(duì)立的內(nèi)部矛盾,是差異的一致,通過(guò)消長(zhǎng)變化以適應(yīng)于多變不息的內(nèi)外條件,而獲得這共同體的生存和發(fā)展。
