一三、英日在遠(yuǎn)東之地位

（一月廿九日）

讀“Everybody”雜志，有倫敦《每日電報(bào)》遠(yuǎn)東訪員Gardner L. Harding論青島一文。其論英國之地位，尤足發(fā)人深省。中引八月二十二日《公論西報(bào)》之言曰：

The position now is that Japan (in besieging Tsing Tao）has practically forced the hand of Great Britain. It is the beginning of the end of British, if not European, influence in the Far East.

〔中譯〕

現(xiàn)在的情形是，日本（正在攻占青島）實(shí)際已經(jīng)縛住了大英帝國的腳，這是大英帝國（不是歐洲）對遠(yuǎn)東的影響終結(jié)的開始。

又引《字林西報(bào)》：

It is not easy to believe that Japan acted in the final stage with the full consent of England… It seems impossible.

難以令人置信的是，日本在最后階段的行動是在英國的同意下進(jìn)行的?！@看起來似乎是不可能的。

《公論西報(bào)》屢言日英協(xié)約之非計(jì)曰：

England has suffered a severer blow in this disgraceful episode than anywhere else in the Far East during the past 100 years.

英國在這一次極不光彩的行為中所遭受的打擊比他過去一百年里在遠(yuǎn)東所遭受到的任何一次打擊都要重得多。
