四三、記白里而之社會名劇《梅毒》

二月三日，此間戲園演法國名劇家白里而的《梅毒》（Damaged Goods），今載其戲單如下：

DAMAGED GOODS

The object of this play is study of the disease of syphilis in its bearing on marriage. It contains no scene to provoke scandal or arouse disgust, nor is there in it any obscene word；and it may be witnessed by everyone, unless we must believe that folly and ignorance are necessary conditions of female virtue.

本劇所關(guān)注者，蓋在因婚姻而感染梅毒的問題。劇情真實而無淫穢，對白健康而不骯臟。如不把愚昧與無知視為保持女性貞操的必要條件，則此劇適宜任何人觀看。

余與叔永、仲藩同往觀之。此為近日社會名劇之一，以花柳病為題，寫此病之遺毒及于社會家庭之影響，為一最不易措手之題。而著者以極委婉之筆，曲折達之。全劇無一淫褻語，而于此病之大害一一寫出，令人觀之，驚心動魄，真佳作也。演者都佳。串醫(yī)生者尤為特色。第二幕最佳矣。

伊卜生（Ibsen）之《鬼》?。? Ghosts ）亦論此事，惟不如此劇之明白。伊氏作《鬼》劇時（一八八一），花柳病學(xué)尚未大明，其攻之者，猶以為花柳之病，流毒僅及其身及其子孫而已。三十年來，醫(yī)學(xué)大進，始知花柳之毒傳染之烈而易，不獨為一家絕嗣滅宗之源，乃足為滅國弱種之毒。白里而氏（Brieux）此劇，蓋得法國花柳病學(xué)巨子之助力，其言不獨根據(jù)學(xué)理，又切中時勢，宜其更動人也。
